    Why not discuss your wishes with your union rep and give him/her a mandate to negotiate an agreed outcome - I'd suggest this includes a reference if exiting is the strategy.

    Be aware if you appoint a solicitor, the union will almost certainly withdraw representation.

    Call me old fashioned if you like but I think you should try never to involve your staff in any of your disputes with your managers. Your staff need to see you as professional and in control at all times.

    Why are you discussing your issues with them anyway? This could be seen as a breach of confidentiality for a start.

    Do you really think they will support you when the going gets tough and it becomes "official"? Will they really want to possibly damage their own positions? Staff sometimes tell you what you want to hear because you are the boss and they want to appear to be your buddy.
