How to get BT to remove a dead phone line?

The previous owners had a second phone line installed that terminates into another part of the house. Most of the retaining clips have broken or fallen out so it looks a bit of a mess now but I know there are rules about doing anything with the cable as it's BT property.
As far as I know, the line isn't "live" anymore but I haven't tried connecting anything to the master socket. Is it possible for me to get BT to remove the line from the telegraph pole to my house? I'm not bothered about them taking away the master socket, I just need it snipped off at the wall.
I'm a BT customer so would they charge me to have this line removed?
If I leave it be and the last few clips break, who's responsibility is it if the cable ends up on the floor?

Yes they'll charge you. If you don't want it just snip it off yourself.:footie:

You don't need to make it neat. Just snip it off at your end let it fall to the ground then get a ladder and reach up as far as you can and snip it off. That'll do. Make sure you are cutting the second line and not your main line....:) Or you can pay BT to come out and do pretty much the same.Wouldn't that involve climbing up the telegraph pole?:footie:

If you recon this line will never be required again, I would cut the wire at the attachment on your wall (not the BT pole) and recover the wire from the attachment towards the socket (leaving the span to the pole up)...BT wouldnt normally remove an unwanted connection, there must be huge numbers of people who use VM cable or dont have a working line, but have a wire from their house to the pole..0
