My Hairdryer Blew Up!

I purchased a hair styler 8 months ago with some birthday money, that cost £40. This week it blew up when I was using it.
I dont have the original recepit or box and Asda where I bought it from said they cant do anything without either of these.

I am a little confused over where i go from here as I would really just like a replacement, but for £40 I feel like the product should have lasted longer than 8 months.
Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.

If you can't find the receipt, there are plenty of excellent hair dryers about for less than £15. Amazon is a good starting point.
  • Well I know exactly when I bought it and it was the only thing I bought on my trip to that shop, so I have no problem fidning the purchase on my bank statement, but when i phoned asda they said they needed the recipt or the box to trace the purchase.

  • They're wrong. You only need proof of purchase - a receipt is easiest for both of you, but a bank statement is fine. Try again, and speak to the manager, not just a normal CS person. Don't back down - remember, you're not asking their permission to return it, you're telling them that it's faulty and you want your statutory rights.

If you still don't get anywhere, come back here and we'll be able to advise you on a letter to send to head office.
  • Go back to the store and ask to speak to the manager or the head of customer service and tell them that according to trading standards a receipt is not required, only some proof of purchase.

Do I need a receipt to get a refund?
Basically, the answer is no but you will need another proof of purchase. This could be a bank statement indicating the purchase, credit card counterfoil or even a witness who saw you make the purchase. A receipt however is obviously the best proof of purchase you can get so look after it until you are sure that the goods are okay
