Help with getting cheap tickets to Chester from London by Train

I have never done this route before but due to shortly & maybe often till I have a car, it seems as though Virgin is the main service from London to Chester. Would I be right in saying that booking way ahead (like 2months)is the best & only way to grab cheap tickets? Don't really fancy being on a coach for 5/6 hours. I am to old for student cards/offers, I am not in the force or an oap. Thanks

If you can book your tickets for future travel ie weeks in advance then look at getting some advance singles there and back. If you can't dictate when you want to travel then look at splitting at Crewe and getting some cheap Super Off Peak Returns Crewe to London Via London Midland trains only, bit of a long journey but can save you loads (Also need tickets Chester to Crewe).

Other options for splitting especially if you can give some notice and travel on specific trains is either Manchester Pic, Shrewsbury and or Birmingham (remember to try Birmingham Moor st as well as Birmingham New st) and look for some cheap advance singles, again makes you journey longer but will save some money.
