    Thanks southerndave.

No overpayments made today as I am building up my childcare vouchers again, so paying for childcare costs by cheque for the time being.

Now that DH is working shifts we have had to increase our childcare costs by £21.50 a week. I work every Friday 2-10pm and there is no option to change this, so family have said that they will help out looking after the children on Friday's when DH is working days/nights :A - so our family will pick up the children from nursery/after school club and look after them in our house and put them to bed until I get home around 10:45pm. I don't know what I am going to do when I am 'on-call' and DH is working nights .

Took me around an hour today sorting out paperwork/letters/filing. Tidied up the box files and had a good sort out.

Was tempted to buy a Vax floor steamer today, but couldn't justify paying £89.99 for one. Someone said it is good and freshens up the carpets. As I am always mopping up after the children, I am keen to buy one, but think I will wait until the price comes down a little.

Had a great weekend, took children to a softplay centre and it has worn us all out! I love going as I get to go on the slides with DS2 as he's too young to go down them on his own.

When DH was in his last job, he used to work Mon-Thur 7:30am-4:30pm and Friday 7:30am-12:30pm. This meant that I was able to do the nursery/school run in the morning before going to work and DH would pick up the children after work as I would have to stay on as I get into work later. On a Friday when DH would come home from work, I would leave for work.

Not seen the steamer, but we bought one of these after looking at hiring carpet cleaners from a local DIY store (they were rank, full of other people's carpet bits, yuk). These are great machines and a lot cheaper than a) hiring one and b) paying a guy to come in. We wash our carpets twice or three times a year now and if there is a spill etc., we can just wash it immediately. It has a nozzle for spills and small area washing. Really freshens up the room and you'll be amazed at the dirt it brings out.....

My parents have a carpet cleaner like this, which I use occasionally. I can't justify the spend on one of these as it is not used enough. The steamer I was looking at is the Vax floor steamer that can be used to steam all hard floors and freshens up carpets as well. It is a thin steamer which looks like the 'Shark' floor steamer.

This one costs £79.99 but looks better as you don't need to add detergent.
  • For hard floors I guess they'd be okay, but for carpets, surely they'd just make them damp? If steam is being jetted onto a soft surface, it will condense back into water and nothing is drawing it back off?

You have a point! I think it is meant to freshen carpets rather then clean them, but at the moment I have decided that I am not going to buy one as it is not really an essential item that I need.

We have been in our house 12 years today :), so 13 years remaining on the mortgage, but hopefully we will pay it off a lot earlier than 2026.

It is a 'free' Council Tax month, so £138 was divided between Savings and Mortgage Overpayment. Total overpayments made so far this month: £141.

DH is being paid weekly (and is enjoying his new job) but worked a week in hand, so only got paid 2 days this week. Next week he will be paid a full week and it will be interesting to see how much he will bring home, as he gets paid a shift allowance.
Did the food shop today and was £11 under budget. We decided to take the children to TGI Friday's for lunch - which they loved, so put the underspend towards this.

Bought the children a £4.99 mesh colour co-ordinated laundry basket for each of their bedrooms today, as DS2 has Eczema so I need to wash his clothes separately (so naturally had to buy one for DS1 too!). They love them - they have been putting their clothes in the baskets and even put in the bathroom towels. Obviously the novelty will wear off, but I have started house training them young :rotfl:.

DS2 had his medical appointment yesterday in London. It was a very long day (and drive) but a positive outcome icon_biggrin.gif. DS2 is going to have further tests on his genes to try and find out if his condition is genetic or if his gene has mutated - we may never know, but they are keen to do some further research on his genes/blood sample.

The good news is that we are going to be referred to a local Clinic and the team of specialists. Unfortunately, the swelling in his limbs is never going to go as it is non-curable, he will always need to wear Orthotic shoes as the swelling will grow - as he grows. However, he doesn't appear to be in any pain (which is the biggest relief of all) and hopefully it won't cause him any pain as he gets older.

DH and myself feel so relieved now that DS2 has been seen by a team of specialists and we are now on the right track for him to start receiving treatment to manage his condition.

On the MFW side of things:
Got paid £3.00 for doing a survey so this has been paid as a mortgage overpayment (every little helps!).

DH has received his payslip and is being paid his first full week's pay from his new job tomorrow - a whooping £120 a week more than his previous job! The money is going to be divided between Savings and Mortgage Overpayment 'pot'.

Using my spreadsheet I have divided our main Savings account into various 'pots' i.e. Emergency Fund, Treats, Mortgage Overpayment, Christmas/Birthdays, Holidays etc. I have decided that I need to add a new 'pot': Car Replacement. DH has been talking a lot about our cars and when they may need to be replaced. There is no way that I am going to take out a loan or re-mortgage to fund replacing the cars, so I have made a start and put £60 into the Car 'pot' :rotfl:! I know it's only a small amount but I need to make a start so will slowly add to this.
