Insuring provisional driver on my insurance

I have a young friend, 24 years old male with provisional licence, and no driving experience (he rides bikes). I'm thinking of putting his name on my insurance as a named driver for a month during the holidays to let him practise and save on driving lessons.

I am with Aviva since 1995, max no claims bonus (9 years+) and protected no claims bonus for something like 5 years. The car is mine.

Am I being foolish? He is very responsible, and I will be with him all the time he drives. It is 30mph residential area.

He will be paying for his share of the insurance, and I'm thinking of asking him to get couple of lessons from a pro before he drives mine.

It is an automatic car (05 reg, Nissan 4dr small saloon), and he intends to get auto licence as well, so he can pass quickly.

Any opinions appreciated:)

Don't understand that bit. Why should an auto license be quicker to pass?

Personally I would advise him to get a manual licence, then he can drive either in the future.
  • agree with with above, auto licenses are restricted to auto cars only, as he's young when he passes his test finding an auto car 1.4 and below is hard, my friend has a auto license, it took him 3 months to get a car he could insure with an autobox in it.

he's better off driving a manual car, there is no quick way to pass manual or auto, that way he has a license to drive both man and auto box cars.

he wont save any money by paying insurance and having lessons with a pro for a while, £20 odd pounds per lesson 5 lessons £100 odd pounds out then if he has to pay insurance on your car that maybe an extra £20 permonth, plus fuel. he would not benefit in saving any money.

my advice to you would be to tell your friend he would be better off driving a manual and sticking to a local tutor, then when he gets a car of his own go on his insurance as a named driver to help cut his premium down

    Thank you both.

I agree, having licence for both transmissions is far better (mine is for both). I'll tell him that, and get him to forget the idea:o

As long as you know if you have a bump you may lose your no claims. It probably wont be protected if
    he is driving.

Get him to have a couple of lessons. Is that enough?

You need to think how many times has the instructor had to brake to prevent him from doing something
    silly.

All you can do it shout stop and hope he does.

You may be alright but you may be hundreds of pounds out of pocket for the next 5 years.

It's been such a long time since I took my licence back in the 80s, I've forgotten what it was like:o
I will do the sensible thing, and not let him use my car.

I will tell him what Atrixblue said, that he should take a manual licence, and get his car and insurance after he has passed:)
