Replying to email from ebay members?

Just had an email from another member and the options were to respond via ebay (it opens a page and takes you to your email account) or reply.
I did reply but does that then send the email to the other person directly showing your email address? Or does it go via ebay first and they just get a false email?
Its just I'm a bit careful about throwing my email address around....

The safer option is to log into Ebay and go to 'my messages' and click the respond button through that.0

I prefer to do it through eBay so that:
(A) the customer doesn't get my email address.
(B) there is a record there for eBay to refer to should there be any problems up the line.0
