Breaking the bank charges chain?

Hi all, been a lurker for a while now and am 'on my way' to sorting myself.

I no longer have credit cards or an overdraft and its quite scary having no security blankes even though they have almost ruined my life over the past few years.

Barclays closed my account and I am paying them back interest free, and I am claiming my bank charges from them too which will help (I assume if/when they settle they will take the money towards what I owe them?).

I since started using an old Nationwide account I had, I am struggling to pull myself out of the money pit and last month picked up a charge of £30 and this month is even worse just had a letter saying they are going to charge me £120 (4x £30) which will in turn mean other payments will be missed that they will charge me for thus starting the cycle all over again.

Obviously its my aim to have funds in my account but whilst trying to reach that goal how can I stop them doing this in the meantime?

Thanks

    Are you serious ?
  • Are there any banks that are better in this respect than others?

All the banks will charge you if you go over any overdraft limit you have. It's your responsibility to make sure you keep the account in order so you don't pick up charges (even though the charges are unlawful).

The only way you can stop these charges completely is not to go overdrawn without permission.

  • So no banks are cheaper than others? Its easy to say 'keep your account in order' but sometimes that really isn't possible, I don't live excessivley and am spending about £10 a week on food at the moment. I'm really starting to make progress and earning enough to pay everything but not always at the right time I just cant afford charges as well.

The banks don't have a hidded agenda they are quite open about wanting to screw you, I find is shocking that this is still going on.

I'm going to call them today and complain, explaining that I will be claiming them back - or should I just start the claim?

If you claim back the charges from Nationwide, make sure you have another account somewhere to use. Nationwide are one of the worst banks for closing accounts that have had the charges reclaimed from.

  • Well I will have to move on as £150 in 2 months is outrageous its been in the black for 6 months prior and will continue to do so after this glitch.
