Car insurance for semi long term use abroad

Hi All

I have just started a job in the Netherlands on a trial basis as a contractor, but with a view to progressing to permanent. At the moment I believe I am not allowed to buy a Dutch registered car (specifically, not able to tax it) without Dutch citizenship, so I will have to buy a second car in the UK and bring it over.

I believe it is usual for car insurers to only allow 3 out of every 12 months to be spent abroad, but some offer an extension to this at extra cost. Can anyone suggest which companies will offer this extension? From searching I found Stuart Collins Insurance but they offered a comical quote of 1600GBP for a car worth around 2000GBP and in insurance group 4! I am only 22, but have a faultless driving record and pay much much less than that on my UK-based car which is group 10 and modified.

If anyone knows of a company that will do better than that please let me know. It would be a real hassle doing without a car but I'm not going to spend 5x what I would in the UK on insurance.

Cheers,

Ben

Jamp...remember that you are only getting 3rd party cover for the 90 days abroad that most policies allow. Obviously buying a reliable, but cheap car is the order of the day. What you might well be able to do is get more 3rd party cover in Holland from a local insurance company. I can do this in Romania with my UK car and its not expensive. Worth checking.

Thanks for the reply. Some policies do give fully comp cover for those 90 days, just depends on the company. I would feel a touch uneasy with only 3rd party cover, but if I could get it for a reasonable price and legitimately covering EU countries I would take it.

Anyone have suggestions for companies that might take on cover of a UK car in NL?
  • are you sure non-residents can't tax cars in NL?

    Doesn't sound likely to me

No, I'm not sure. It's just what the rep from the agency who are employing me has said. She had a British husband so I'd expect her to know, but you're not the first person to question it.
