i visited ny a few years ago able bodied at time with a friend who was a regular visitor. she took me to all sights as she knew way around. i am going this time in a wheelchair and with husband who has never been before. does anyone have any experience of travelling around new york in a wheelchair. also i dont know way around and am there for 4 nights so want to show hubby as much as possible. hoping to stay near times square as from what i remember that was pretty central. but afer that how easy/hard will it be to get about? i know sub way do great deals etc but for obvious reasons a taxi will be more suitable but how much is that going to cost? would it be possible to sightsee and not break bank by taxi to each tourist spot?

Hi
We visited New York with my Mom and her wheelchair and had no problem at all. It was our first visit so didn't know our way around. We had a tourist map and most of the time we walked to where we wanted to go and then usually got a cab back. Most of the tourist spots are within walking distance of Times Square and its great strolling around seeing the sights. I'm sure you will have a great time.0 -

where did you stay and did you find taxis expensive to get around0 -
We stayed in the Upper West Side (on the left hand side of Central Park on the map) and we would just stroll through the park down to 5th Avenue. Sorry can't remember the name of the hotel. It was very easy to get around and I don't remember the cabs being expensive (it was a couple of years ago). In fact on the first day we didn't intend going very far as we just wanted to get our bearings. We ended up having breakfast in Grand Central Station and going up The Empire State !0
