Yes, he can. He may be asked if the car is registered in his name and if not, why not, but as long are they are happy with his answer they will issue the insurance policy.
  • thanks for that although not the answer i was looking for how does he stand on taxing the car in future as she holds the log book and she did buy the car with her money.

You say she was a named driver, this implies he was the main driver. Do I suspect from your questions that she is hoping to be able to stop him having/using the car? She needs to discuss this with her solicitor.

The logbook does not prove who owns a car only who is the keeper? Does she have proof that she bought the car?

If she purchased the vehicle with her own money, and it's insured and registered in her name then it appears to be 'her car'.

Did he have permisison to take the vehicle? If the answer is 'no' then she might like to phone the police and report the vehicle stolen as her ex-husband will have 'taken vehicle without owners consent'.

    yes.

What question are you trying to ask?

I guess it's can he make the car his?

The answer will be yes unless she does something about it.

I had a quote for car insurance for £180. Then when I said that I was not the legal owner (it's on Contract Hire) it went up to £290! So you can insure a car that does not belong to you but it will cost more.
    Can I help?

    Yes.

Of course they do. They have no interest in who owns the car.
