  • Yes, cable. If you've checked the OP, you'll see I'm with VM and looking to get out.

Well Virgin do Broadband on BT lines too as well as Cable.. If your getting 6Meg on cable then no that awful... but on Copper wire that good. I live out in the country side and can get (up to 20 Meg) but only get 7meg & it consitantly.. So not complaining as i thought i could on get half a meg..

Yikes, have just typed my postcode into the 'compare broadband' website and it seems to show that VM is virtually the worst performer at 10Mbps where most of the competition is at 20Mbps or better.

Is that remotely possible? My page changing seems very rapid. Am I missing something here?

If you're talking about the time it takes for a web page to load, then you probably won't notice much difference between a 10Mb/s connection and a 20Mb/s one.

According to weboptimizer.com, the MSE forum home page is a fairly hefty 1,154,506 bytes. If the data-transfer rate is 10Mb/s, the page data should be transferred in less than a second. In practice it will probably take a bit longer due to overheads, DNS lookups, page-rendering, etc., and so the data-transfer time is probably a relatively small part of the page-load time.

The higher bandwidth Internet connections are more useful when downloading large files. Downloading a 2GB file would take around 27 minutes at 10Mb/s or half that at 20Mb/s.

I'm on the Virgin 50 meg service and it's full speed all the time , and thats on 2 PC's , one of which is wireless!

Have you complained to VM about the speed? Don't forget you can also go through the 'Thinking of leaving?' option and try and get a better deal out of them!!

I too get great speeds with VM. 9.8 when it's up to 10 Mb. Have you been downloading lots? They will restrict you when you have gone over the download limits. Can't remember what they are now tho :/
