Its a VAT requirement which replies on a stupid amount of varibles which means its not a reliable condition. For example, if there are storage issues in keeping records HMRC may allow you to store less...which makes a mockery of trying to say its a set in stone requirement.

I have little experience within retail sales accounting but it is my understanding that they must keep a copy of the VAT invoice. That invoice may be a less detailed version i.e. one issued during the card payment processing and the retailers copy can be an electronic copy.

A company with the sales volume of JL would be foolish not too, let's put it that way. The store may only keep a copy for 6 months but HO would keep an electronic copy for 6 years. So the OP could ask for a copy from Customer Services help line (if they have one(?))

Indeed they can, but they also need to prove that it is an inherant fault.

With receipt: Claim under warranty. No need to prove inherant fault.

Without receipt: another form of proof of purchase, as well as proof that the camera is suffering from an inherant fault.
