Buying an ipod second-hand

Hello,
just wondered if anyone has had any experience (good or bad) of buying an ipod second-hand from ebay or Amazon... was it a sound (scuse pun!) buy? What were you careful to look out for?
I want to get a replacement for a 30GB 5th gen ipod classic; don't know if it's just safer to buy a new one, although the current one on sale through Apple has far more memory [160GB] than I really need, and costs £200!)

The apple refurb store can be good value http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/specialdeals/ipod
I've bought from eBay before and as long as you avoid the "iPod style" players and go for a recentish model you may well be ok...0 -

these ones are really good, bargains as well0 -
The problem with ipods is that most tend to fail for some reason after about 18 months of regular/constant use. The battery is usually the first thing to deteriorate, but there are some great battery kits you can buy.
So the safest would be an Apple refurb, or a refurb where there is at least a 1 year guarantee (or would be covered by insurance).0 -

HMV have an offer on at the moment. You can part ex your old iPod and they'll give you up to £70 of a new one. http://hmv.com/hmvweb/navigate.do?ctx=4096;16;474;-1;233&pPageID=5007&_tag.WT.ac=highlights_tech_211011_instoreOffers0

Bleepandbooster: how long have you had your refurb for?
Mechanic: that deal looks attractive, except it's only for a touch, which I don't really want as it looks/feels more like an iphone without the phone part! Just wanted a 'conventional' ipod with click wheel thing, and max GB (would be happy with 30 again or maybe up to 50) without paying £200!0 -

Hi this is my first time posting so sorry if I've not done it right lol ...
Mechanic I've looked at this on the Hmv WS but can't see if the ipod you trade in has to work? Dropped mine in a sink full of water and it won't work lol but would like another one x0 -
In case to be not cheated,i think it is safe to buy one that from the one you know.
but it is not absolutely bad to buy one from Amazon, but you need to make sure you have the ability to define the ipod.0
