Motorcycle Insurance

Options
I'm looking to renew my motorcycle insurance and up till now have always gone for Fully Comprehensive cover.

What I would like to do is insure my bike for Third Party Fire & Theft for part of the year, say till the end of March. Then insure it from April to September as Fully Comprehensive cover then finally from October to January reduce the insurance cover again back to Third Party Fire & Theft. Ideally all on one policy rather than insuring three separate times

When I asked my existing insurers for this arrangement they said they did not offer it. Are there any MSE's out their that know of any insurance companies that offer this?

Also I do intend to have my bike off the road and will be declaring a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) to the DVLA so would not need Third Party cover. Is there such a thing as only Fire & Theft cover only for motorcycles?

Certainly FTO and ADFT cover exists for cars and see no reason why it doesnt for motorbikes. Given that both are very low volume business it tends not to be something that insurers invest money in building into their websites (esp as you would get complaints from people not realising that FTO means the vehicle cannot be taken onto or left on a public area who then get stopped by the police/ have an accident)

I dont know of any insurers that will do what you want re switching levels of cover.... ecarinsurance does however do a monthly rolling policy and I am sure I remember seeing that they do a bike one too (guess would be ebikeinsurance ;) ) so it may be possible with them but you would have to look into the NCD situation depending on if you are still trying to build it or already at max

Two companies for you to try.

Carole Nash (don't have a link but you should be able to google for it).
They are very good for motorcycles and may be able to do what you want.

Another company I would recommend is
    https://www.ebikeinsurance.co.uk
They are very competitive and do a "pay as you go" policy which may be suitable for you.
I think you get a years no claims after 8 months.
They are competitve and you maintain everything on-line.
I have lots of friends that use them.
I have no claims experience with them and have never heard of "Southern rock" so obviously do your own research as well, but I'm happy to pass those two on.
  • I think ebike are the only company doing pay as you go - Good if you are a seasonal rider.

Try www.bikingneeds.com if you need an annual policy - It's one of those comparison sites but just for motorbikes.

    Good luck!
  • Just one thing to beware with ebike is that they dropped the "riding other bikes with the owners permission" clause from their policies. I drive my wife's car TPFT on my own insurance with this, and my brother and I swapped bikes for a while when we met up for a rideout last summer in the same way. If you never ride anyone elses bike then it's probably not an issue, but may be worth knowing about.

I'm a very satisfied former eBike customer - I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them - but I have now moved to Churchill because of much lower price and the cover on other people's bikes. I was really stumped late last year when I couldn't move a friend's bike due to lack of insurance cover.
