hp g70 overheating, charging unit, battery problems???

any computer whizz kds out there

been having unexpected shutdowns, system freezing, slow operation so checked for the usual virus, bugs but all appears clean.

yesterday the unit stopped charging the battery, up until that time the battery was still in use for up to an hour but now I cannot log on at all.

someone suggested the charging unit but where is it situated? is it next to the cable plug? this area was very hot.

currently using a tower (antique) to log on, very slow but useful in the circumstances.

    Hi there,

Freezing and slow operation could be overheating due to dust buildup or the surface that the laptop is sitting on (do you use the laptop on a soft surface?)

Does your battery indicator light up when connected to the wall, check both the transformer and the laptop itself. Is it the transformer or the laptop that gets very hot? If it's the transformer, can you hear any buzzing coming from it?

Out of interest what did you use to check for viruses?

  • thanksfor the reply

laptop was on a soft surface now I know it should be on a hard surface with air circulating.

battery charging light did until yesterday light up now nothing lights.

the transformer did not get hot just the bottom of the laptop at the side near where the cable was plugged in.

I used ad-aware by lavasoft and cyber something both were negatve except for the usual cookies.

also have norton internet security installed

Okay remove the power cable and your battery (there will probably be a sliding 'switch' with a picture of a padlock on the underside near the rear of the laptop) and the battery pops out near the rear of the underside. Check the battery connectors for damage and dirt, clean any dirt from the battery bay gently using a soft bristle toothbrush or similar. Your battery may need replacing.

Check the underside vents for blockages and clean as well, you may need to use a small screwdriver to remove the panels to clean the inside. You've probably picked up a lot of dust and lint from that soft surface. If you're uncomfortable with any of this I would suggest a repair centre.

Take the battery and plus the power supply in and see if it turns on. If not do you have a multimeter to test the output voltage.

Sounds daft but have you tried changing the fuse in the plug. (always worth a try)

  • checked the plug, its ok, it does not power up with or without the battery.
