I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. This is ridiculously harsh IMO and you should definitely appeal as far as you can.

I bet 95% of people wouldn't realise this is something that had to be declared. I certainly didn't and would only think along the lines of alloy wheels, bigger engine etc. What's next - not declaring a bumper sticker?
  • Appreciate it everyone.
Is it too late for me to appeal/complain? considering its been 9 days since they cancelled my policy.

    Regards

    No.

Try speaking to a c/s manager first to state your case, rather than going straight into a "complaint" (which could take a long time to reach a resolution).

If that gets you nowhere, then embark on the complaint route.

You really have nothing to lose!

and find a link to the FOS case Suemaggie posted above so you can refer them to it as part of the discussions, on the face of it that case is so similar to yours that they would be foolish not to change their minds.
  • Thank you everyone, been a great help.
I've sent an email to the complaints department of the insurer, just going to keep fingers crossed and hope for the best response.
Will definitely let you know how it goes.

    Regards

One of the things you should establish is whether the front tints are legal or not. Did the insurance company claim that they were illegal?

The law states that the front windscreen must pass 75% of light and front side windows 70%, as described here:

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/AdviceOnKeepingYourVehicle/DG_181016

If they were legal, the tint would be so light that it would not (IMO) have been unreasonable to assume that they were like that from the manufacturer.

If they were illegal, I'm guessing you probably won't have a leg to stand on...

If they don't reply write a letter and post it using recorded signed for post as insurance companies have a habit of "losing" post.

Even if you do this they may still claim they have lost your letter but if you have the receipts and copies of the letters, this will not wash with any regulator so they will tend to sort the issue out once you inform them the letter was tracked.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

Think I’d be inclined to go with Quentin’s advice, often things like this are easier (and certainly miles quicker) to sort out over the phone.

If they still won’t play ball then you can always drop back to the formal complaint route later
