Avoid brands with lots of preinstalled 'bloatware' such as HP
Just throwing money at a new laptop wont necessarily get you what you want. You have a techy friend right? (everyone does) - tell him/her what you want, take a trip with em to PC world and have a look around/play with some of the machines on display. Take the make and model of the one you like then shop around for the best price.
Don't have a techy friend? then you'll need to tell us what you want from your laptop to get the best advice.
Also .... the MacBook Pro is a "reaaaaally good Laptop" IMHOP.I.C.N.I.C problem: Problem In Chair, Not In Computer0 -
It depends what you want to do with it. Some are good for games, others for general stuff etc...
MacBook Pro's are very good, albeit expensive.0 -
Or if you have a good idea of what you want, you go Pic 'n Mix and have it built for you (I got my desktop custom built a few years ago - obviously got what I wanted and no bloatware in sight!)Now free from the incompetence of vodafail0

Well I am doing media a college, so i want things like InDesign and Photoshop... Obviously i know that Macs would be the best for this but as you all know that are really expensive, let alone all of the expenses of downloading photoshop and indesign which are 300pound each?0

A lot of colleges offer a subsidised price on the adobe products, especially if it's relevant to the course you're on, check that out before buying it yourself.
InDesign and Photoshop you'll want a good sized screen with a good pixel density, lean towards Samsung in this respect.

So what is your budget?
You wouldn't post a question saying 'which car is best?' without saying what you want to spend. No different with laptops.
If you don't want to have to reinvest in Mac versions of your existing software (even with the student discount), then stick to a Windows-based machine. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Macs USED to be the best for use with Adobe software, and still is in some fields, especially in pre-press as they handle certain aspects more smoothly than PC's. But if your just learning then a Windows based Laptop will be much better
Get Adobe creative suite 5.5 for £333, better than buying individual programs.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -
Well I'm a Student and I also have other expenses to pay so I could probably spend money on a Mac, but I wouldnt be able to afford the programmes with it.0

So it would be completely pointless buying a Mac then...No free lunch, and no free laptop0

buy one with the best processor and screen you can afford, don't worry about the ram too much as it's so cheap/easy to uprgade - have a look around for comparisons on the software you will be using http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/desktop-cpu-charts-2010/Image-Processing-Adobe-Photoshop-CS-5,2426.html
the hp business models (probook etc) don't have the same levels of bloat, so don't be put off by the first reply here, you just have to research exactly what you are getting! This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
