netbooks

i've been looking at them the past few days with a view to getting one for my son for playing games like moshi and developing keyboard skills etc

argos seem to be offering the best prices and i'm considering these:
Asus 1011 PSDC

Samsung N145

they look quite similar but the samsung suggests a 10 hour battery while the Asus suggests 6 hour

other than that are there any significant differences between them in terms of performance?

or are there other low cost netbooks that would be a sensible alternative - not wanting to spend more than i have to

thanks in advance for suggestions

They are quite similar, but the Asus appears to have the better processor - dual-core, while the Samsung is only single core. That in itself will cause the Asus to be more power-hungry, all other things being equal.

Last time I looked, Samsung netbooks had better, brighter screens than most other makes, though that may have changed now as that was about a year ago.

I should add that now is not the best time to look for good prices. You are now past the point in the year where most retailers put their prices up for Christmas.

Look out for bundled free software, some can be very good.
And you might as well avoid Windows XP versions in favour of Windows 7.
