Help with car insurance & no claims bonus please...

Options
Hello...

I have been trying to find a decent price for car insurance over the last few days using the insurance guides on MSE...I thought I had finally got a sensible price to insure a Vauxhall Corsa Envoy 998cc (worth £400) at £228...

I am 44, female, no accidents and have had a licence since 1994...I let my last car go in 2009 as my partner became terminally ill and we could not afford extras like a car...A friends father is selling the Corsa and now we are a little more settled financially it would be a big help...Incidentally he does not get the high rate mobility DLA..He gets low rate mobility & high rate care so we wont qualify for any help there...

I was unaware that the six years protected no claims I had with my last insurer was only valid for a period of two years. I have missed the cut off date by a couple of months and consequentially I have now had to redo all the quotes and searches etc with a zero no claims and the quotes are now coming out at £430 - £650...More than double and certainly more than the car is worth...

Can anyone recommend anything or have any advice that would help please?...Its looking like we wont be getting the car after all...

Many thanks for any help and thanks for reading...:)

  • There are a couple of insurers that recognise an NCD for upto 3 years, if you search on here you will find others who have asked it before.

Whilst I wouldn't suggest having a big sob story on the phone it can always be worth talking to insurers/ brokers as whilst the general rule is X they may have the ability to waive it or give you some form of incentive to come with them if you explain the issue to them. Obviously some are simply going to say computer says no.

you could see if any insurers let you hold on to your NCD for longer than 2 years. Not sure if any do but even if you have to pay a bit extra on the premium to use that company, it'll even out the next year when you can use your full NCD with another company

Or try a broker, they may be able to get you a deal with an insurer

Finally, pay the £430. It's still a good price for insurance with 0 NCD

if i hadn't added option three it'd look like Inside Insurance had copied me instead of the other way round :D

me again.... also ramp your excess as high as it'll go. If you have a £300 excess it's not worth claiming on your car as the £100 you get back will be eaten up on renewal.

Although not a recommendation, aviva may be a port in a storm. They will take your NCD up to 3 years old.

How about telephoning the company you last had insurance with and explaining - they may be able to be flexible?
    I think....
  • Hi again everyone...:)

Many thanks to those who responded...

I have managed to get a quote from Co-Op Insurance...They accepted my 6 years no claims discount as they allow you to hold on to it for up to three years...:j They beat Aviva by about £40...

Got fully comp, protected NCD, Legal protection, £350 excess and courtesy car thrown in for £280.80 :D

It means so much that it is now at a more palatable price...I can take my partner out and hopefully make his illness seem a little less of a constant burden...:)

    Thanks again peeps!...:T
