Best sat nav?

Apologies if this is on the wrong forum, but please could anyone recommend the best sat nav?

I've looked at the tomtom 1005 which looks good but I haven't got a clue as to what's needed and what's not.

It's a gift for O/H - won't be driving in Europe, only UK, and needs a big clear screen, speed camera warning and traffic jam avoidance where possible.

Thanks anyone in the know.

Define best? Every one will have their own opinion. In the absence of that mine is you can't go wrong with a TomTom. But don't forget speed camera and map updates will cost extra for most sat navs.

Is the speed camera option needed, i manage ok without using a sat nav with speed camera alerts.

Best as top of the range Tom Tom usually comes out tops in tests .

That of course may not be best for value for money spent for an individual user .

TomTom always comes out on top, it must be a market leader for driving by far.

That said they are all much of a muchness, nothing wrong with Garmin, I also use CoPilot on android and Sygic on Android. they all work.

I would say it is mostly down to budget. you can get a perfectly functional £30 job from Ebuyer or spend the money and get a TomTom.

Traffic data is normally supplied form a third party for all of them anyway so traffic should be consistent between them all.
speed cameras again are fairly generic, the same database is used for a lots of diffrent types.

As the first reply said, we'll all have an opinion, and there's no such thing as "the best".

Of the 3 makes I've used (Navman, Garmin and TomTom) I had an overall preference for Garmin, as their user interface always seems to be simpler. My past experience of TomTom's Customer Service has also been dire.

Thanks everyone. I think I will go for a tomtom as they seem to be the better performing satnavs from what I can gather.

Is it worth spending the extra on the 1005 or will a cheaper model be just as good if there will be no driving in Europe? What does the 1005 have that others don't?
