Yep, the DSR ratings are completely unfair.

I'll bet you I'm the only one who will agree with you though, most other people seem to reply to this question with "well, if your performance as a seller was up to scratch, you wouldn't have this problem.". However, even if your performance IS up to scratch, getting low stars can still happen to anyone.

    Its COMPLETELY unfair to sellers.

Anyone know the lower limit? I've been given a 4 month grace period but can;t see why.
  • I know what you mean, I am a low volume private seller so a couple of low stars can really affect me. I put particular effort in to avoid low stars, v cheap postage, v quick dispatch, I have recently waited a week for payment before I opened a npb, they paid pretty soon after and I am expecting low stars now.
  • I give free shipping on everything and have a less than perfect score for postage costs?
  • Haven't had a grace period, but had a week where I sold some stuff that was lying around (Nintendo DS and a load of DVDs). Postage was as low as I could make it, and sent as soon as possible, yet I have a 4.6 for P&P and 4.7 for Dispatch time.

Funny thing is, practically all the feedback I recieved mentioned that it arrived quickly...

I suspect one problem is that ebay simply don't understand how people work. The stars system seems to work on the basis that if it was acceptable you should give/get 5 stars and that anything less is in effect a complaint and so ebay start to get concerned about this. In reality some people will only give 5 stars for exceptional service, and will think that 4 stars = good, 3 = OK 2 a bit weak and 1 or none abysmal. As a buyer that occasionally reads this forum I've come to understand the way ebay treats stars so work to their rules and generally give 5's even though my instinct is to save a 5 for the really great rather than the pretty good.

I fully agree too. Ebay should ban negative feedback when the buyer is to blame.

Really think these performance stars should be limited to bigger business sellers.

I've had the same problem, one woman waited over a week to pay, then marked me down on everything! It's low cost, 2nd hand things I'm selling from home after clear outs. No way to make up the stars after they are down. At least as a business seller you can take the hit on a few stars. The thing that annoys me is, if you have a couple of people leaving fb at the same time, you can't tell who has left the lower scores, therefore can't do anything to improve it :(

  • The system is totally unfair. It assumes that buyers are smart enough to give accurate rating for each transaction which isn't the case!

eBay gets away with it because they have monopolised the online auction scene. Until a real competitor (Goggle are you listening) join in the game then eBay will do what they like and still get away with it!

When the stars were first introduced, I though thought the same as you. I only discovered 5 stars meant "normal" from reading this forum! I now give 5 stars most of the time but there's no way of indicating exception service apart from saying so in the feedback.
