travelex - No Indian Rupees

Having looked at Travelex's website, I noticed they don't allow pre-ordering of Indian Rupees. Where am I likely to get the best rate online or on the high street?

I'm pretty sure the import and export of the Indian Rupee is prohibited... best to get it there?

  • When I flew into Delhi airport there were two bureaux de exchange? in the main arrivals hall, just after the customs and immigration controls. From memory, one was Thos Cooks and the other Bank of India. We went to BOI and just handed over our sterling and received the equivalent amount back in Rupees. A good rate of exchange and none of the bureaucracy of a bank in the city centre where you could end waiting ages while they feel lots of forms and ledger book in by hand. Do go for exchanging some sterling at the airport but a better option is to open a Nationwide bank account and get their visa card, its much cheaper and simpler.

Don't know if there are Cashpoints at the airport, but there are quite a few in town.

there are exchange desks in the airports but the rate is bad.just change a small amount there then wait till you get to the resort to change big amounts at a better rate.;) ;)

  • With today's news re the 2 dollar pound ($1.99) would it not be a good idea to hedge your bet and buy some dollars now and when you get to India exchange them for Rupees?

plus the fact that dollars are more widely accepted than pounds.especially in the budget hotels.

Also if u are planning to shop in duty free while flying in/or out all the duty free prices in indian duty frees and in the transit airports(if any) are in USD. They usually have a lower rate for pound/dollar than what we get in the UK.So spending in dollars makes more sense.

Whatever you do make sure that you exchange in the authorised money changers/hotels. You might be approached by people giving a better rate than the official ones without any documentation. Be careful of them!. Apart from the risk of hard currency getting into terrorist deals you would also run the risk of getting fake money in exchange!
