Practicalities of transfer

I'm transferring from npower to ebico.
Npower sent me a card that referred only to gas, but I'm transferring both. They said on the phone that they know that, but I'm suspicious that may go wrong.
I've been told the transfer is taking place on the 2nd and Ebico say they're sending me info about what to do about readings, but I haven't had anything yet. They seem to be cutting it a bit fine.
If I don't get anything more, shall I just phone both with the readings on the 2nd anyway?
Have others found a transfer like this to go smoothly? I'm anxious because when I moved into my current place and found that Npower were supplying the fuel, it was a nightmare sorting the meters out. For example, they couldn't get their heads round the notion that if the electric meter had no credit left in it, the doorbell wouldn't work so they kept turning up and driving off while I waved and shouted frantically out of the window then chased them down the road. (It happened three times on one day!) Then they told me they'd arranged for me to get a new card for the meter at somewhere that turned out to have closed down several months earlier. That was just the start of the problems.
So is leaving them any easier or am I in for a rough time? Would it be a good idea to actually write to Npower and Ebico with my readings rather than just phoning?

You only provide the readings to your new supplier, they then send copies to your old supplier that way both bill to the same readings. You need to confirm you Supply Start Date for each fuel to ensure you provide the readings within the correct time window.
As to your doorbell, some our battery power so the person would not know, so why didn't you just stick an sign on it saying 'Not Working, Please Knock'?IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Fair comment. I'd arranged on the phone for them to sound their horn, but did in the end put a post-it note up asking them to sound their horn. That was in desperation after I'd arranged with the person online that they should sound their horn, and even when I left a post-it on the door and they sounded their horn they didn't wait for me to get downstairs. In the end, I rearranged for the next day and spent several hours sitting on a camping chair in the drive of the block of flats.
It's communication, though, isn't it? If the person on the phone is going to pass on the password, you'd think she'd pass on the message about the doorbell as well. I was just hoping I wouldn't have the same problem leaving them, but I suppose we'll just wait and see.
I wonder whether Ebico will mess me around less with my bills? I seem to have had a run of bad luck with Npower, but I know someone else with them who's been fine. Just pot-luck I suppose. And it must be awkward having upstairs customers.0
