Shares - locating portfolio?

Apologies if I shouldn't be bringing this up on this board but I couldn't find a Shares designated chat forum on MSE.

I have a fairly extensive portfolio of shares (all smallholdings worth next to nothing mainly) and due to my debt I want to start and clear them out and use the money to pay off the debt. What is the best way to find out exactly what I hold as loads of the companies have either gone into liquidation over the years (old OFEX etc) or the shares have been consolidated, therefore I can hardly sell what I haven't got to a broker if you get my drift. All my shares are in paper certificate form as well.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance
