Being made redundant whilst on SML

I've just been told, i'm being made redundant. I'm currently on Maternity Leave.

They tell me my job is no longer available as they have discovered whilst i've been on leave that the aspects of my job are best done via other people at other sites and not centrally.

They coming back on Monday to discuss next step and last day etc.

I just dont have a clue where i stand or what to do. My heads already mashed from having a baby and now this

They will need to be very careful making you redundant while you are on mat leave, but if they are careful it can be done fairly and lawfully. However if you are selected for redundancy because you are on maternity leave, then you may have the basis of an unfair dismissal claim (and it does appear from what you say that if you hadn't gone on mat leave they may not have even considered doing the job in another way. Whilst that is not necessarily conclusive, it does aid your case, especially if you are the only one being made redundant and this is not part of a wider exercise.)

Without any more detail I think all I can advise you to do is take delivery of the information they give you at the consultation meeting, and take it to an employment lawyer asap for a view on whether you are being dismissed on the grounds of your mat leave or whether there is a genuine redundancy here.

If you are in a trade union, use them, otherwise check your household/other insurance to see if you qualify for any free advice.
