I can’t see how this works = must be a scam

I was sent a link from a friend about a ‘pyramid’ style scheme where you have to register and send on your details to others and after you have ‘referred’ enough people you are sent a free ipod.
I will not place the link here as I am sure even if it is not an outright scam then there must be a lot more involved and a lot of catches, so I do not wish to be responsible for propagating it.
They have done a lot of work posting themselves up on multiple forums in attempt to look legitimate and frequently refer people to a BBC News Night piece apparently approving of the scheme.
Please could someone explain how this scheme works and why it’s a bad idea…I am highly sceptical and thought I would warn people although I am just going on the ‘if it’s too good to be true principle’.
Thank you all

You have to sign up to an offer like free DVD rental trial. By doing this the website get money from the advertiser. You then have to refer other people to do the same so that the website can't get enough money to get you gift.Come on you Irons0

We see lots of these schemes posted on this site. They are always removed because they are banned from here.
This is what Martin says about them..................MSE_MARTIN wrote:Pyramid schemes, lottery based pyramid schemes, Ipod bidding schemes etc
The legality of these schemes is questionable, yet the ethics isn't. These schemes fly in the face of MoneySaving and whether illegal or not I don't want them on the site. Any scheme which offers a prize/reward/cash for you queuing up and referring other people is not permitted on this site and will be deleted. Repeated posters will have their posting priviledges removed. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Sorry I did look for any previous mention of this but could not find it on the forum and didnt know exactly what to look for else where on the site.
I have edited my post and removed the company name so it can not be found and understand if the post is removed completly.
Thank you for letting me know. I will know to outright delete them next time I get sent one.

It's just a classic pyramid scheme. Some people DO get iPods from them, but very few.0
