Slimfast? any good?

Hello all!

I am so desparate to lose weight it is really getting me down :-( I have put on almost 2 stone in a year and am heavier than when I was 9 months pregnant! :(

I know one of my problems is I dont drink enough.... for expample today I have had 2 green teas and a glass of sparkling water that is it! How much water do i need to drink a day? I dont like squash or anything but can i include green tea i nthe water allowance or does it need to be just plain water?

Also, has anyone tried slimfast? I think it will be easy for me cause I dont have to worry about sorting out any meal except for dinner which is great as I have a lot of running around before work dropping my son off etc so to just have a milkshake for breakfast would be great!

I have also looked into slimming world but just think it looks really hard to follow.... is this the case?

Please help :-( xxx

Slimming world and weight watchers are by far the best way to healthy eat and to lose weight for the long term. They can be a little difficult at first, but as soon as you know what your doing, off the weight comes.

I tried SF and I found the shakes to sweet, tesco/asda do their own version which works out much cheaper (unless SF have deals on), but they are even sweeter.

Me personally prefer low carb diets, such as atkins, and I have also been on cambridge/lipotrim (similar to lighter life but much cheaper) I lost 6 stone but I then fell pregnant. Reason I prefer low carb is because carbs make me hungry, there is science behind it.

I too am thinking what shall I do to lose weight.

I have so far cut out rubbish, eating smaller meals, drinking plenty of no added sugar squash or bottled water (I detest council pop), and upped my exercise as much as my back allows. But I don't know if this is working because for some reason I feel bloated, and prefer to just follow a plan.
  • I did slimfast three years ago and lost almost a stone on it. I came off slimfast and all my old habits came back - that's the thing with meal replacement diets; they don't change the way you think about food. They're a quick fix.

As you'll see from my signature, I'm dieting again - I'm heavier now than before I did slimfast before!

I dont understand why I dont lose weight, for example yesterday I had a jordans cereal bar, sashimi and asparagus salad at lunch and then sausages, onion gravy and peas for dinner (no mash :-( ) this is a pretty standard day, i usually drink green tea, sparkling water or lemondade......

When I gave up carbs for 2 weeks i lost almost half a stone but it is just getting the first week out of the way....

I just feel so down that I seem to be putting weight on but I dont feel like i eat badly so dont know what i can cut down on :-(

This is the heaviest I have ever been... i tried a dress on last night that i wore 3 months after having my son and couldnt get it over my legs :-(

Do you think I could do the slimfast to get rid of the weight quickly and they go onto slimming world to maintain it?

I think it depends how you use slimfast and what you want to get from it. I used it for a month or so to get my tummy used to less food and I definitely have changed my eating habits, I no longer eat as much or bad food.

It is good if you need a quick start to a diet so you feel like you're being successful and to give you the encouragement to carry on. There's nothing worse than dieting for a week and seeing absolutley no loss on the scales.

I've lost 2.5 stone since February, the first stone was on slimfast, the rest has been more gradual from reducing my intake and eating more sensibly. I don't eat breakfast, never have, I tend to graze during the day and have a normal family meal in the evening, just a smaller portion, I do drink alot, around 6 large glasses of water/squash a day. I'm still losing weight, not very fast, about 2lb a month, but it's still dropping off.

My sister on the other hand started WW in January, she lost 17lb in 11 weeks but that was being super-strict using, the scales not eating out ever and counting every morsel that passed her lips, she's now put half a stone back on, for her it just wasn't sustainable to live like that while her family were earing normally.

Different things work for different people. I know 100% that I couldn't do SW or WW, I just can't be 'on a diet' while everyone else in the house eats normally and I also know, that despite everything SW, WW etc say about eating breakfast, lunch and dinner, my body doesn't need three meals a day.

Good luck finding something that works for you. Once you find something that works it makes it so much easier.

Yes, it's certainly true that different weight loss systems work for different people.

My stepdaughter has to date lost 8 stone with SlimmingWorld. While it obviously works for her, and she has made some good friends at a time in her life when she needs friends, she tried to explain it to me and I couldn't get my head around it. Nor could I get to grips with WW.

What I've been doing since the end of July, however, is the Dukan Diet. This does make sense to me and it works. I've lost 11 pounds since end July. I'm happy with that. The weight did not go on overnight, obviously over some years, and if it comes off slowly it is much more likely to stay off.

I agree with clearing_out_my_pockets. There are no quick fixes, and it is essential to change the way you think about food. I'm firmly convinced that weight control starts in the head and not in the belly.

In response to peachyprice, I couldn't survive without breakfast. This, to me, is the essential meal of the day. DH and I have protein, that usually means egg in some form or other. We don't have breakfast cereals - too much carbs.

You should drink between 1 and 2 litres a day, and this can be any form of fluid whatever - tea, coffee, water, diet coke, as long as it is fluid. Although some people say that only water counts - well, that's arguable, and I'm no expert. I only know what works for me.

well...i think slim fast is good if you have say to go to a wedding in 3 weeks...or a party next month...it is just a short term fix..

its isnt something u can stay on for ever...

imo slimming world is something you could do for the rest of your life...i started it 15 weeks ago...and i have lost 2 stone 10.5 lbs.....i am never hungry....always grazing...and i can honestly say...i never ate so much in my life...so its working for me...

but every one is dif....like i have over 6 stone in total to loose :o...im nearly halfway there.....so i cud never do that all on slimfast...but for anyone who just wants a nice party dress to sit better on them...or has less than a stone to loose...then slim fast could be just the ticket (i lost 10lbs in 3 weeks on it before)

good luck with whatever you decide to try, :)

You should drink between 1 and 2 litres a day, and this can be any form of fluid whatever - tea, coffee, water, diet coke, as long as it is fluid.

Allow me to set this straight please. Water / milk / tea, pref without milk and sugar (green/herbal/fruit teas all good), juice if nothing else available, coffee if nothing else available, again pref. without milk or sugar. Plus the water content in food, difficult to measure I know.

Diet and fizzy drinks don't count because of their chemical constitution.

If you don't drink enough water the body will retain it, which you don't want.

Start the day - before anything else - with a tumbler of water, it's a good way to get you, and your body, started, it will rehydrate you, and wake you up better than any expresso. You should be drinking a minimum of 1.5 lts a day.

As for slim-fast, take a look at the ingredients, do you have any idea what most of them are and are you are happy to put all those chemicals in your body? Whilst you will loose 'weight,' it won't be fat, it will be water and lean mass. The last thing you want to loose is lean mass (muscle) as it's one of the things that keep your metabolism going.

If you drastically cut calories your metabolism will slow down, so you won't burn as many calories as you were before, the fat that you desperately need to get rid of will stay where it is, there will be an initial 'weight' loss and then you will plateau.

You won't be getting all the vitamins and minerals your body needs which puts your body under more stress...............is this really filling you with excitement???

I find this surprising. I'm not trying to 'convert' anyone to WW, but I've lost 14lb since mid September. During this time I've eaten out at Giraffe, Nandos and Cafe Rouge. I've even had a takeaway Pizza Hut. I eat the same things as DH, just slightly adapted - if he has steak and chips, I have steak and salad (and maybe pinch a couple of chips from DH's plate :rotfl:)

Ive used slimfast in the past - and I lost about a stone and a half over 5 months - I know its not the healthiest option but I did used to snack on fruit in the day and eat lots of veg with my evening meal. It does take some getting used to and I found some of the flavours disgusting - I only really liked the coffee pre mixed shake or the do it yourself chocolate shake. I did feel hungry in the beginning but that soon wore off. 4 years on Ive kept half of the weight off but have since stopped smoking which I think is why Ive gained a bit.

Ive got a good social life but even though I carried on going out for drinks and meals once or twice a week (when I would eat what I fancied) I stuck to the slimfast plan the rest of the time so it wasn't total deprivation.

Oh and the chocolate snack bars and pretzels are lovely!
