Unpaid over time and contacted hours, is this legal?

This is why its not always possible to do two part time jobs if you cant find a full time one, like so many benefit bashers on here tell people to do. Errrm because the jobs can clash with each other because most employers will think "oh it doesnt matter if the hours are short one week cos my employee can claim tax credits. And if i want them to do extra hours they will just have to tell their other employer they cant come in.
Shame the OPs original post cant be automatically flagged up every time some know-it-all suggests doing two part time jobs.
Excuse me but nobody said this. So where are all these people who say it??? Presumably down the pub having the night off???
Sorry, _ i have every sympathy withe the Op, but if you take on two part-time jobs that is your problem to sort out. The employers don't have to or need to work it out between themselves - they don't care what othe employment you have.0 -
I have seen many adverts for part time jobs (some for as little as 8 hours) but then the adverts go on to say that you must be available for more (just in case) basically expecting you to exist on 8 hours money (poverty pay)0

Rubbish. The nastier elements on this site say it all the time.0 -

Evidence please? I think you wil find that some people suggest that if you cannot live on the wage paid by your employment then you consdier taking on extra employment. And sometimes it isn't that easy, no. But the "benefits bashers" seem to generally contain their ire to people on benefits making no apparent effort to obtain employment of any sort - and I cannot say that I always disagree with this stance.0 -
I have found this in 95% of retail jobs I've worked in and so have my friends. They say the job is for x hours and every week you are put down to do more. It's amongst the reasons I never want to go back.
I'm beginning to regret taking the job on, the thing is if the advert had said friday nights, sundays etc i would'nt have bothered applying, as my hubby works monday to friday, but it said friday night for 3 hours, they ring me at home constantly to get me to cover other shifts, i find it difficult to say no so end up going in......I feel like i can't make any plans for the weekends because i know i'll be pressured to go in.0 -
So it would seem i really need to just grit my teeth and bear it then unless I can speak to them and have them agree I only do what I'm contracted to do. I just cant get my head round why you'd employ someone for 8 hours when you know youll need them to be doing much more, because I did mention at the start that it is definitely part time i need.
But as for the expecting me to stay on longer without being told, its not out of order for me to ask to leave on time is it? Surely they need to at least ask if I can do it first.
Im on a whole pound less than the NWM, but am paid soon so will work out what it is I actually earned when I get the pay slip though.
Thanks everyone for your help.0 -

This is exactly how I am feeling at the moment. I dont even know what I'm expected to work next week, I'm just supposed to show up and check the rota and be able to do it without any prior notice.
If someone asks to make plans with me I have to tell them I dont know because I dont know if i'm working which I find a bit ridiculous.
I'm hoping they give me less as they take on more staff because it is ridiculously understaffed but this isn't really my problem as they have had months to sort this, and I feel I should have at least been made aware of the situation considering I made them aware of mine.0 -

I know it sucks does'nt it, i have no other job but a husband and 3 kids, i just wanted a few hours a week to ease me back into the working world, i just wish they'd told me at the start and it would have saved a lot of wasted time, i think i'm being conned to as i'm only accrueing holiday on my 3 hours a week when in reality i'm working around 15 hours a week.....also they are going to open boxing day and new years day, there is no way i am working on those 2 days so i think i will have to leave.0 -
Did the employers definately confirm at the original job interviews that the positions were part time?
Most people have a recording facility on their mobile phones these days.
Maybe people should start recording thier job interviews.0 -
