TalkTalk 404's and "helpful forwarding"

Hi, dose anyone know how to bypass annoying 404 ad's?

Its something really small but has starting to annoy me. I pay talktalk for a connection to the internet and i think that is what they should provide instead of this tampered connection. A number of times talktalk have helpfully forward me to play.com for no reason (i.e. went to lost.fm insead of last.fm and talktalk tells me "'lost.fm' isn't a valid web address. Please wait while we connect you to: play.com". )

Oh FYI no spyware/aware and have never installed software from talktalk

"404 Not Found" means that you tried to access a web page that doesn't exist. Nothing to do with your ISP. Just type or copy the URL carefully into the address line. If you find that "weird" things are happening, it's invariably because you are using Internet Explorer and it has been compromised by malware. Download "Firefox" or "Opera" and install that instead. You'll have a lot less problems.

  • You will not be able to remove these. I have experienced this at my parents.

When you ask TalkTalk for a website it looks up its IP address i.e. moneysavingexpert.com resolves to 213.129.77.16.

TalkTalk notices that the site is not resolvable to an IP address and so rather than give your browser a standard 404 error message - it actually sends it a page of its own.

Actually thinking about it as I type this - you may be able to avoid this my changing some settings in your router.

Somewhere there will be an option related to DNS servers, which is probably set to get automatically or something similar. Try changing that to a manually specified and using the following servers instead 194.164.6.112 and 128.107.241.185 - these are free DNS servers. As I don't have TalkTalk broadband here I can't test it - but it works in my head. Let me know if it works :)
