A card in my post box said that a package had insufficient postage paid on it and they would deliver it when I paid. It was £1.30 to pay and I did not know what the parcel contained or where it came from but it seemed worth £1.30 to find out since it could have been something really nice.

Now that's optimistic of you... Many years ago when I wasn't working; I had one of these and it turned out to be a letter from the JobCentre telling me something I already knew. I gave them (JC) hell about it next time I was in and they reimbursed me from Petty Cash.

It used to be a pain that the only time I could get to my local delivery office was Saturday mornings (when it was nigh-on impossible to park nearby) but last autumn they decided to stay open to 8pm on Wednesdays. It's on my route home from work and parking is free after 6pm. For once RM got it right!
I need to think of something new here...

I am old and retired. No-one is going to send me money or jobs and if I get too worried I can go to the sub post office anytime.

I am still inclined to believe that the CD from the nephew was the package since it never arrived and anyway there is nothing I can do about it now.

Like I said to the sub post master, when you don't receive it you can't say who sent it or what the value is it makes a claim a bit difficult. No info to put on a form.
It's not my fault your honour, they made me do it.

If your nephew got proof of posting (even a simple receipt from his PO) then he can claim against RM for losing it - the cost of the CD plus his postage costs - and get you another one.

I once had a situation where I'd ordered a book over t'Internet. Card came to house; I went to delivery office and they couldn't find the parcel. I asked the seller for date of posting, gave their e-mail to RM with the Claim form and hoped for the best. 10 days later, cheque and apology letter from RM. 1 day after that, book arrives through letterbox!

So I've no idea if the local office found it and delivered it while the central lost mail office was refunding me OR something I had no idea was coming got lost and has never been seen again.

Hope you get something nice next time:)

You make my point. The nephew and the CD could have nothing to do with whatever was lost. The nephew could indeed claim but he thought it wasn't worth the trouble. For my part I could only claim if I knew for sure what it was that went missing and I would only know what it was if it didn't go missing.

    Bit of a conundrum there.

    You're too decent, Squire :)

You know the CD was sent; you know the CD was not delivered thus you know the CD went missing. Your nephew has the better claim but you as recipient could also claim if you have the proof of posting. (Or would have done if it hadn't been too long before he told you he'd sent something).

What you don't know is whether the card was for the missing packet with CD or for another missing packet altogether.

You also know that you paid the £1.30 for something to be delivered and it wasn't. So you should be able to take the sub-postmaster to task for that if he gave you a receipt for the stamps you put on the card.

OK - maybe you think it's too much hassle - your call.

Yes it's too much hassle and time has now gone by. Of course I don't have proof of posting. I am sure my nephew hasn't either. I can't even say for sure what was posted.

    I shall forget it.
