can they take all your income support as repayment? i'm asking for a friend, but i assume if this is money given to you for your basic needs they'd need to leave you a min amount and can't take it all, am i wrong? or if i'm right what would be the amount to live off for a single mother of 2

what if it's several different things (like a budget loan and council arrears ect)? is there a threshhold they can't go under combined or anything?

  • From what I remember they can only take a certain percentage and it's split between what she owes. I've had a few crisis loans and I think the most that ever came off IS was £10, but that was a while ago. I'm a single mother with 1 child.

ok well what happened was she had a new claim and it didn't come out of her new claim as it should, now there sayings as she didn't inform them (she didn't know she had to) that it has to be paid for the new tax year which leaves her with £3.60 to live off a fortnight she sayings it her own fault and ok it may be in a way and yes it does need paid but surely they can't take everything

  • I have a friend who has 15.75 a week taken off her IS for a loan so its differs from what other payments you have to pay.

You can request that the loans be rescheduled and they will look at this and decide if they can lower the repayments but legally all they have to leave is 10p per week,
  • The maximum they can take is roughly 20% and that will include any other deductions and committments you have (other loans, HP, fines etc).

It also normally has to be repayable over 104 weeks. It's often well in excess of £2.50 - £5.00 a week.

The higher your social fund debt, the more you're going to be paying each month, and over a longer period.
