Wise after the event - price increase

Options
I am currently with click energy with British Gas, but in the process of switching, as it has been a disaster from the start. It seemed like a good idea when I signed up, to keep your finger on the pulse regarding your meter readings, bills etc. I was supposed to receive an email when my bill was due asking me to read the meter and submit a reading so my bills would always be correct. Three bills later I'm still waiting for that email or any other online communication other than bills.
So my question is this. Does anyone know if customers are supposed to be informed of price rises before they happen to give you a chance to go elsewhere, especially in the case of the "in touch" click energy? Apparently I have been paying more for my electricity since 8th January according to the letter I received this morning (22nd). Nice going British Gas. No wonder customers are leaving in droves.
