Windows says new updates to install every time PC is shut down

Windows XP Home, I have Updates set to Automatic but noticed that every time I shut down the PC it says there is an Update to install. Had a look at the Updates history and noticed it installed this:

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - January 2007 (KB890830)

...every day for the last 10 days!

I'm not sure if it is successfully installed or not (or if I can remove the old installation to have a clean retry) - Add Remove Programs under Security Updates does not show this one.

Any suggestions?

(PS a tick shows each repeated installation of KB890830 was successful).

Try to download & install it manually (it may help to disable your antivirus software when doing so). Then reboot to see if the problem persists. G
  • or set the permissions to ask everytime and dont download it, and tick 'Never remind me again' box when you click OK.. just another way anyhow
  • Uninstall all of the downloads, got to auto update and download manually.
Reboot and go to autoupdate and select customise and expand all of the security updates, if it's there again, click the check the box underneath the description and it shouldn't be included again.

However if you uninstall the previous versions of the update 1st then manually update (to get a clean install) then go back to auto update.
Go to customise and expand all of the updates. if it is there again, there is a check box so that it won't be offered again.

(Sorry didn't realise the other post had gone on as had got an error message  )

Well I have sort of taken up the suggestions here. First I manually installed KB890830 (but still it does not appear in the Add/Remove Programs list). Then went into Custom mode in Autoupdate website and said don't download KB890830 and don't remind me. After a shutdown and a restart the Install Updates nag is gone. Waiting to see what happens when newer updates appear. Thanks to everone for your help.

It doesn't appear for me either. I think it's just something that runs once to remove the threat if present. G
