Have run CPU-Z and it has generated the following report. A 2GB kit is £22.79 and a 1GB kit is £21.59.
Grateful for advice on what I should be buying.

That's the Processor information, not the memory. That's a different tab on CPU-z (CPUID).
For that price, just buy the 2Gb kit

PC2-5300 is cheaper than PC2-4200 currently anyway, so if you planned to discard the old RAM and plump for 2 x 1GB, it should be fine.0 -
XP does have readyboost, if you have a USB stick it might be worth a quick try rather than spending any cash at all. And the limited data rates of USB will only be affected by the number of devices connected as it shares the resource equally over the connected devices. Or so my favourite search engine tells me.
Yeah ignore the whole install 64-bit OS - won't affect readyboost anyway and god knows what I was thinking. Serves me right trying to do this and work at the same time.

XP does not have ReadyBoost.....0

He means, by moving the pagefile to the USB stick. Seriously NOT recommended. If you unplug the drive you'll BSOD, and if you turn off and unplug the drive, even plugging the drive back into another USB port will probably cause the PC to not boot. It's better to just avoid it, especially when you consider the cost of the RAM in question is probably cheaper than an equivalent USB stick with ready boost. He physically can't take more then 2Gb. ReadyBoost just won't work here.0

Thanks for replies guys. Have ordered the 2 x 1GB memory. Fingers crossed it's as easy as you reckon!!!0

Wow always makes me smile with some of the 'advice' given on forums.... I can hear Closed approaching with a request for a HJT file and a link to the 'speed up slow or infected PC's'

For the record, I recently opened up a Dell 3100 and as TakeThis says above, the PC will have older/slower memory than what Crucial show not that it usually matters when upgrading ram as newer/faster ram should slow down if required. Get 2Gb and be done with it.
