Upstairs is a big sash window and in the living room its like half of it opens and the other half has a small opening at the top. (if you get me) I just thought if I put it on now and then take it off in summer have I got to buy more for next winter, cos surely it starts getting costly to do this every year. (or maybe Im a bit tight). Thanks for your help sandieb.0

Try packaging companies. They sell rolls of cheap stretch film in various widths for wrapping pallets. You should be able to find some local ones in yellow pages. Viking have it 500mm wide

which you could use with two lengths for your window but I'm sure it is available wider than that.0 -

Presumably you could fix the film on the inner edges of the windows to allow for opening/closing? I fixed a small rectangle to the edges of a small fanlight in the bedroom and that works - although I nearly put my finger through it once.

I think that, at the worst, you would have lost about a fiver. It's probably worth giving it a go to see how efficient it is and how long it lasts. Mine is hardly visible, but effective. I did 2 whole windows (in sections to allow for windows to open) there's still LOADS left.0 -
sandieb wrote:Have you got a Wilkinsons near you? They sell insulation packs for approx £10 and £5. I bought some for my north facing bedrooms and have been pleased with the results as far as noise, cold and condensation are concerned.
The product is called Window Seal Instant Double Glazing and I bought the 12 sq metre pack (£9.99 ish) This product is marketed by Oracstar NN4 7HS (Nottingham?) Hope this helps.
There are more details here: http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:diQ-Nx-0HsgJ:www.wilko.co.uk/ideascontent/diy/thismonth_003.htm+%22window+seal%22+instant+double+glazing&hl=en&gl=uk&ct=clnk&cd=3&lr=lang_en Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be a live page any longer, but it is still available in the Google cache.0 -
I've just bought some today from tescos. It measures 1.5m x 3m so should be plenty big enough OP. It cost £3.47 a bargain I thought. HTH0

Good luck manda1205 - let us know how you get on! It's a fiddly job so don't try to attempt it if you're in a rush.
Also I would recommend applying it before the windows get condensation on them. I did my windows during a cold snap and, when I used the hairdryer to "tighten" the seal, the heat of the hairdryer and the coldness of the glass generated some condensation. I wish now I'd done it when the windows were "warmer".0 -
Thank you so much everyone for your advice - I went to Wickes and bought the secondary double glazing kit and did the first window today - it's brilliant! am going to buy some more today and do all the windows!

Ah - so it's because of you that the weather has turned sunny! Thanks Aitch7
Glad you've had success with your windows - simple but effective eh?0 -
You could also get shredder bags. These are like bin bags, but clear.
Alternatively, go to a bootsale and buy some heavy curtains. You could even hang them behind the current ones, so it doesn;t matter too much what they look like.0
