weekly challenge for all you 'pack ups/lunch box' workers...

i wonder if you might like to enter this challange with me... dont know if it will work but its worth a try  the aims...

* to use up odd things in your cupboard
* try and make the niceset lunch possible
* to spend the smallest amount on your weekly lunch boxes

so anyone want to join me... the first few weeks i am going to try and use up all the odd stuff in the frezzers and cupboards... but i wil later on be trying to make up my lunch box for a fraction of the cost... at the momment working out the price of each individual sandwich/roll etc my lunch box costs 99p per day so thats £6.93 per week and £27.72 per month :o i am determind to lower this still...

so it works a little like moozies (sorry for nicking it hun ) weekly spends challenge... you must set an amount you will spend on your lunch box that week... the challenge to get it below this... even if you have to beg, borrow or steal food :rotfl: its a fun thing really but i tend to spend more on my lunch each day because its not varied ~ this is when the machines at work start calling me :o so we could share recipe tips too as long as they are mse...

you dfw's... think about it say you spend £2.00 on lunch per day thats (if you work 5 days) £10 a week... thats £40 a month and £480.00 a year :o so anyone willing to join me...

*btw if you dont like the idea please let this thread fall off of teh boards :)*

Sounds great! I need to be more creative with my lunches. Always seems to be either tuna or peanut butter and jelly, two clementines, and a cadbury's brunch bar. Although sometimes I mix it up with a red or yellow pepper. LOL

  • welcome aboard mh... mine is usally two rolls with cheese spread, a yogurt that i then put 2 boxes of raisians in, a piece of fruit and a packet of crisps... i am hoping to make some soup tommorow (depending on the price of the stuff) and i am going to look in the cupboards for other inspiration i know we have tuna in there and cous cous... but what else i never know :rotfl:
  • Hi there! I am definately up for that!
I'm a student nurse on placement at the moment and its really easy right now just to take microwavable stuff or cup-a-soups to do in the staff room but I'm back to college in feb and tend to spend a small fortune in the cafeteria/shop!
Love the idea of swapping recipes as I get really bored of the same old salad everyday!!
when will we be posting our forecast figures? the weekend?
    looking forward to it!
    thanks

    Hiya,

I make lunch for hubby & me, tortilla wraps are a staple favourite (filled with leftovers or ham (yummy). Cheese & pickle/tuna by the end of the week (cos it sits in the fridge and doesnt go off) on rolls/bread

or pasta salad, (with sausage/leftovers/tuna again!) or just leftovers on their own (fajitas are best I think) :D

I think overall I average at 44p each per lunch. insulated lunchbox and ice blocks are an absolute must though!!! esp in my office! :T

We don't have a microwave at work, so any recipes for pasta salads that are good cold would be much appreciated :)

I have a cool bag, but no ice blocks. Instead i end up using my first aid gel pack, but i'd rather leave it at home so it was always ready for me when i have a migraine. Where do you get ice blocks anyway? I never see them when i'm out.

hiya maureen wave2.gif at the momment i am just playing with the idea but yes if you want to join me i think i will apply this properly the weekend... so say we post and estimate what we will spend for the following week? if its already in your cupboards you will have to guesstimate but anything else you buy for your lunch box's will have to be added... but remember if you buy say a bag of 6 crisps and only use 5 that week remember to take to odd bag out (will require a lot of maths :rotfl:) cant wait now... making a list at the momment of what i can put in a lunch box...

I got my lunch box and ice blocks in Robert Dyas, but any homewares places should have them.

My favourite pasta salad is cold pasta (must must wash it otherwise it all sticks together), sweetcorn, tuna & salad cream, (never ever mayonaise on cold pasta  dont ask me why though :rotfl:

we have a fridge in our place (large office) but I prefer to keep my lunch under my desk, 1. so I know no-one else is eyeing it up (!) and 2. so I can tuck in at about 10.30 when I get hungry!!! :rotfl:

  • here is a small list of some 'different' pack lunches... if people can add to it i can maybe pop it in my opening post

    *soup (homemade)
    *cous cous salad
    *baked potatoes (topping of choice)
    *filled pittas
    *wraps
    *pasta salads
    *quiche
    *plain salad
*small meal of last nights meal (when cooking on a week night make an extra portion for the following day)
    *sausage rolls (homemade)
*pies/pastys (homemade ~ choice of filling)
    *ravioli
  • I love the idea of this thread and would love to join in but... my meals are provided for me when I'm at work so instead of this saving me money, it would increase costs!

I will defo keep my eye on this thread though cos it sounds fab and you never know when the work situation may change!

    Good luck all!
