Need account with debit card

My hubby is not working at the moment, and has a savings account that his incapacity benefit goes into. It has a 'hole in the wall' card, but he can't use it in the supermarket, online etc.

Does anyone know of an account he could open that will let him have a debit card? He doesn't need an overdraft facility and only really wants it in order to make the odd internet purchase. He has been told by his current provider (Abbey) that he can't have a debit card as he doesn't earn enough per month.

Any help appreciated! I thought there used to be an MSE article saying a cahoot card could be used for under £500pm, but I can't find the article any more....

Thanks!

Go for the Citibank Sterling current account, there's loads of threads here about it, you can apply on their website & as yet, nobody i'm aware of has been declined. They give a cheque book & Visa Delta debit card. I'm sure saint will come do the linky bit for me :)

Thanks Tigerlily, but the Citibank details say you need to deposit £1500 per month, and gives an overdraft facility. We've only just managed to get all our debts paid off, so our credit rating won't be great and we don't want to lie on an application form.

In the meantime, I managed via Saint's links to find the Yorkshire bank Readycash account, and the Halifax Easicash account. Both have debit cards, but don't give any interest whatever. Cheeky, but basic. Any other ideas?

    Hey.

Right, firstly, the majority of basic bank accounts either don't offer any interest on credit balances or they offer a very very low amount. After all the account is a basic account, it serves the purpose of having account, but not much more.

The CitiBank account is still an option to you. You don't have to pay in a salary of £1500. But from your OP, you won't be eligable for an overdraft. Which you probably won't want anyway.

Aslong as you pay in some form of income to the account (not sure if benefits are accepted) then you should be fine.

I would recommend applying their first. No need to lie on the forms, just put down your circumstances and see what happens.

Takes about two to three weeks from when you apply online.

Go through Quidco though for £50 cashback! :)

Well alot don't deposit that much, I only pay in about £600 a month, the site can be confusing but you don't have to pay that in. Also I don't have the overdraft, I ticked no to it. I didn't lie on the forms, lots here ticked no overdraft, which they do turn down due to credit checks. My credit is 2 CCJ's & about 12 defaults amongst other things, I really think you'd be fine!

How about Nationwide BS - pays a small amount of interest, will accept less than £500 per month credited into account and appear to give a debit card. Worth giving them a ring ? 0800 30 20 10

Thanks for the replies, I'll go give him the options suggested!

(I hope I didn't imply that anyone lied on their application forms or were recommending to, because I certainly didnt mean to)

    Thanks again :A
