Help Please! Message "This copy of Windows is not Genuine"

All of a sudden out of the blue and in the middle of using my computer, I get a black screen with the message "Windows Vista (TM) Build 6002 - This copy of Windows is not genuine" and keeps asking me for a new product key.

I type in the product key that I can see on the label on the bottom of my computer and it won't accept it.

I have no idea what has happened and why this has happened.

It is a genuine copy of Windows because it came with the laptop that I've been using for over 2 years.

Can someone please help a damsel in distress please. I have no idea what has happened and why it has happened.

I have tried to download a Service Pack 2 (I found out that info on the internet), but it won't allow me to do that.

Can someone please help me? It would be very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance

You'll also get a number to call and register, where you can speak to a person. Quite often they'll give you a valid license key if something's gone wrong; and seeing as you've been using it for two years, you have a license and a copy of Vista - you shouldn't have any problems.

I have this occasionally as I run the same instance of Windows in dual-boot from a MacBook and also as a Virtual Machine. The memory is different in each and occasionally it has a fit.

If it doesn't correct itself (which it appears your doesn't) you should be given the option to call Microsoft? This is an 0800 number and you will be asked to enter a long series of numbers and then it will re-activate your version.

I'm concerned that you are trying to download Service Pack 2.

This should have been on your laptop from the start and you should now also have SP3 installed.

If this isn't the case then, once you have resolved your licence problem, you should check for outstanding windows updates.

According to Microsoft "The latest service pack for Windows Vista is Service Pack 2 (SP2)."

Vista SP2 was released in April 2009. There is something seriously amiss with your Windows Updates settings if you have not downloaded it 2.5 years later. If the laptop was new in Autumn 2009 then SP2 should have been pre-installed-so I assume that the laptop is a second user one-and so you can't be sure of the licence validity.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
