Pet adoption?

  • We adopted a dog 6 years ago from Lisburn Dog pound as we too felt we would never spend big money on a dog. We picked up Penny with her dog license for £20 within 3 days Penny started showing signs of being un well. She had been at the vets but they hadnt started her vaccinations. On the 4th Day she started taking food out of the house and hiding it in the garden, we took her to the vets and she was sick on the way there. By the time we got there, only 10 mins away she was barely with us. Turns out the food hiding is the first stage of Parvo. Something we'd never heard of!
10 days later and £650 lighter on the bank balance Penny was back to normal! We phoned the pound when she was taken in just to warn them and they advised us to put her down! Thats what they do!!!

How many other poor dogs are put down rather than seeing in a vet :(

See this is why I am almost thinking of getting a dog from a place who does put dogs down, just to make sure that one less will be put down. Poor wee things
  • You could also contact the Dog Warden at Armagh Council, she is usually looking to re-home dogs. We got a lovely puppy from her at the beginning of September!

I tend to agree with you Emmy as it would actually save a dogs life.I got one of my dogs from a Council pound 15 years ago when she about 4 months old.She like your's got parvovirus and our local vet said they might put her down but i wouldnt let them as i wanted to give her a chance to see if she could fight it.Delightedly to say she came through it and lived to the ripe old age of 14 years.
Its so easy for some of these people to stick a needle in an animal and go and eat their dinner without a second thought.I find most of them patronising gits who cant really be bothered. After all we are only a cash card to them and our beloved PETS/BABIES/COMPANIONS/BEST FRIENDS are only animals to them.
I would urge anyone thinking of getting a pet from a pound to do so rather than spend hundreds of pounds on a "status" dog just because it makes them feel good about themselves. They will feel much better about themselves if they saved a dog or cat from DEATH.rant done thank you.:D

Hi, Our vet ( based in Lurgan ) runs her own dog sanctuary. We have known her for years and wouldnt hesitate in reccomending her both as a vet and for rehoming a dog. We are currently fostering 2 of her oldies, if you search for lucystrust on facebook you will be able to see details of the available dogs and also contact her.

Good luck in finding your forever friend :0)

As regards Assisi, we (ex & I) had rehomed a lovely dog from there but long story short he had to be rehomed back with them as he was just too bouncy around the kids. I have felt so much guilt since - you have no idea how much.

Recently there was a glitch on Whiskas where it was £3.49 for a big box of pouches that should have cost £13.49. I got 3 boxes and took them up to Assisi. On my way towards the gate a bloke asked if I wanted a hand. He ended up taking them all to the food store without so much as a "who are you" or "thank you". I went into reception (after being told I'd come in through the wrong gate - yes, the one the bloke escorted me through) and enquired as to whether my darling pup had bee rehomed as the ex hadn't checked in a while. I casually mentioned leaving in the food but again, the girl there didn't say a word.

Before anyone says anything, I didn't donate to get a medal or a nice shiny certificate but I did at least think I'd get a thank you. To be honest it's made me think twice about going there to rehome another dog.

Even if you rehome from a rescue, you are saving a dog as it will free up a space and they can take in one more in its place.

I don't wish to comment on Assisi's front-office staff or volunteers but I urge people not to be put off by any bad experiences they may have had in that respect.

Get through the door to the kennels and/or cattery and you will find staff and volunteers who are devoted to the animals they care for.

Assisi's animal-care standards are very high. I know this because my two cats and my girlfriend's three cats over the years have all come from Assisi and we have spent a great deal of time talking to the staff in the cattery.

l have visited the sanctuary a lot over the past decade and I have seen the great work they do there, often in the face of unexpected threats such as a spate of break-ins a couple of years ago when people were trying to steal guinea pigs and cats for very unpleasant purposes that I won't spell out here (the burglaries necessitated a major security upgrade).

Please support Assisi by rehoming animals and/or making donations. Even if there are times when you don't get a 'thank-you' from a person, rest assured that you have given an animal a better chance of a good life.

Also, if you are making a donation at the sanctuary itself, please consider doing so at the front counter rather than just the collection boxes. Fill in a Gift Aid form when you make your donation and the charity will get 25% more at no cost to you - ie donate £10, fill in a Gift Aid form and the charity will get £12.50. If the person taking your donation doesn't know about the form, ask to speak to the manager.

Can I just ask did the bloke who helped you take the food to the store have a uniform on? if not, he's perhaps one of the volunteers who often help out and although he should have thanked you for your donation, he just didn't think to thank you.

As for the reception staff, I have been in there many's a time and find them to be helpful and polite. They're usually pretty busy with people making enquiries about the animals and the phones never seem to stop ringing, maybe whoever it was behind the counter just didn't pick up on your casual comment about bringing in the food.

Please dont let it put you off donating to them again, and dont be put of rehoming with them. Always look for a member of staff wearing a blue t-shirt, the voluteers are great but dont realise how important the donations are to the sanctuary.
