Pet adoption?

Options
We are thinking of adopting a dog (no interest in buying when there are so many out there in need of a home and some love). I am wondering where they best places are to look?

We are based just outside of Portadown and I have seen Craigavon council do pet adoption and also a place called 7thHeaven which looks nice.

In an ideal world I want to get something fairly young (it doesnt have to be a pup, I just want it to be a long term family member) and small to medium in size as the mini me doesnt like big dogs much (shes short for her age - 4) and so i would like to be able to look in a few places to find one that will be right for her size wise as well as personality wise.

  • There's https://www.benvardinkennels.com and assisi-ni.org which are both N.Ireland based sanctuaries for the so many unwanted animals here. There's also Dogs Trust which is in the Ballymena area http://www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming/searchcentres/ballymena/default.aspx
  • I got our dog from Craigavon "Pound". pure bred, (No papers obviously) Shame as so many people have commented on what a lovely dog he is. Mind you we also made use of the free castrating offered so he wouldn't be much use to any lady dogs LOL!! Also got microchiped through dogs trust.. All in I think it coust us less than £30.... Mad... why would anyone spend a ortune on buying dogs from these breeders when there are perfectly lovely animals locked up in pounds around the country.

Not sure if you've had a dog before but please just be aware of the true costs of having a dog.
Insurance, food, vet fees, boarding if your going on holiday..... it can all mount up..

It is with regret that I have to say that my daughter who is a real animal lover, did a walk over hot coals about 4-6 weeks ago, for Assisi and managed to get sponsorship of close to £500. She and my wife left the money in personally at Bangor. She did not even receive as much as a thankyou from staff there, nor did she receive a receipt for the money(some problem with receipt book if I remember correctly). Despite corresponding with Assisi since, she has still not received a receipt. She collected this money with the assistance of her sister (another animal fanatic) and friends and family. In tight economic times like now, this was not easily achieved as a lot of people put animal charities well down their list of priorities. We have donated to Assisi in the past as we had a great wee dog for 17 years, but this experience has regrettably left us extremely disillusioned to say the least.

I have no wish to denegrate any animal charity. This incident may indeed not be typical, but I feel that the very least you are entitled to expect having handed over peoples hard-earned cash is a simple "thankyou".

This place is just across the border in Monaghan.

My late Uncle adopted a couple of dogs from them and when he passed away they helped find a home for a small terrier that he had. They looked after him for months before a suitable home was found.
  • Thanks for the links guys! Some of them have such sweet looking little doggys! Fingers crossed within the next week or two we will go visit a few places and adopt a dog :)

Warmhands, I have never had a dog myself but my OH has had a few and his family are huge dog lovers and almost all have them so he knows lots about them :) but thanks for your concern.

Well done to your daughter!! - Very slack from Assisi - hopefully they will read this or some-one will highlight this thread to them so that your daughter gets the thanks and appreciation she deserves (although not quite the same after the fact)
  • We adopted a dog 6 years ago from Lisburn Dog pound as we too felt we would never spend big money on a dog. We picked up Penny with her dog license for £20 within 3 days Penny started showing signs of being un well. She had been at the vets but they hadnt started her vaccinations. On the 4th Day she started taking food out of the house and hiding it in the garden, we took her to the vets and she was sick on the way there. By the time we got there, only 10 mins away she was barely with us. Turns out the food hiding is the first stage of Parvo. Something we'd never heard of!
10 days later and £650 lighter on the bank balance Penny was back to normal! We phoned the pound when she was taken in just to warn them and they advised us to put her down! Thats what they do!!!

How many other poor dogs are put down rather than seeing in a vet :(

Thanks andrew129 and hazelc56 for your kind comments which are appreciated. I was just very disappointed for both my daughters and all those who contributed. I could not walk on hot coals either. However, I genuinely do not want to turn this incident into a vendetta and feel that having aired my views and had the responses referred to, it would now be best to allow the thread to continue and put this incident down to experience. My daughter is not even aware that I have posted here about this.
