BT New Line Order contract magically grows in length at checkout

Ah the joys of moving and of course our beloved institution that is BT.

I just ordered a new line install with annual payment of the line rental and a weekend calls package which when you select it is labelled as 12 months (and given my previous experience with BT I have screenshots of the steps)

Get to the end to find its morphed into an 18 month contract once I checked out.

Had a second go to see that in the summary it changes from 12 to 18 months in a section you have to scroll down to on the final page before checkout.

So the question is twofold:

1: As I have paid the line rental in full for the period I chose do I hold BT to the 18 months at the £120 line rental pre pay?

or

2: Do I get the contract shortened to the 12 months I chose before BT massaged it and made it grow?

Has anyone else had this experience?

  • On a brand new line provide there is a connection charge which is normally £130 with a 12 month contract.

However BT are doing a special offer of a reduced £30 charge but with an 18 month contract, did you sign up to this?

We spoke with BT and they explained that if you took broadband it was £0 or if you took a talk plan it was £30 or with nothing but line rental it was £130

When you sign up online it offers you the weekend plan with a 12 month contract for £0 additional cost to select and that gets you the discount in the order process, its only when you get to the final summary that it changes to 18 months. Looking back at the screenshots its also not the same package that we selected at the start either as it has grown some inclusive features as well.

It also doesnt mention the need for an 18 month deal at the start to get the discount either, all in all its a pretty poor effort on the e commerce front from BT (how unusual ;) )
