Are Express Pay, Visa Paywave and MasterCard Paypass compatible with each other? Can I use a MasterCard Paypass card on a Visa Paywave machine and vice versa?

Yes they are. - Just like with Credit Cards, makes no difference who supplied the terminal. I presume, like with cards, AX's fees might be higher, so a number of merchants might not accept them. That would be a question of choice, not of technology.
Come to think of it, the terminals for contactless cards are still as rare as hen's teeth.0 -

I must say I've seen a lot of contactless terminals recently. I guess a lot more contactless cards are being issued.0
