Is it better and faster to go direct to say Scottish Power or use one of the comparison sites for £30 - £40 cash back.

No, it's best to rearch using a comp site and switch via a cashback site to maximise the return. There is no delay this way as you click through to the merchant site for the actual sign up.
But a switch takes 4-5 weeks however you do it, there is no way to do a 'fast switch'.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
