Cancelled echeque

I have a purchase that was pending after echeque payment, just checked the paypal details again tonight (it's about 10 days old) and it says cancelled. I've emailed the buyer as I'm not sure if they know.

What happens if they don't respond - can you still open a UID? I would really prefer my fees back if possible.

I seem to be messing things up on ebay just now - got my first low on postage the other day, and have messed a customer around today after promising first class postage for an urgent item and DH posted it second..despite it saying 1st on it :(

too many comps..not enough time!

No, you can't open a UID.

You need to contact the buyer to see if they'd like to cancel or repay.

If they ignore you for more than a week, I would send a cencellation request and close it manually 7 days thereafter to get a FVF credit.

With the low ratings, I'd advise sellers to go as close to stamp price as possible on their P&P - even then with Free P&P some buyers will compare you to that and rate you down. Just keep an eye on your dashboard and switch to Free P&P if you need to.

If you phone ebay they may well allow you to open an UID as item has not been paid- you may need them to do something their end though as sometimes it won't automatically allow the UID to be opened.

I had an echeque not go through 2 days ago and I can open an unpaid dispute on it if I want.

I haven't checked if it was cancelled or just failed to clear due to funds. Is there a different ruling for these 2 outcomes, in terms of being allowed to open a dispute?

Any reason should be anough to allow an UID to be opened, I made the mistake of assuming that OP found her self unable to open a dispute for some reason.

Thanks everyone, buyer didn't know and has now paid me by bank transfer so all sorted. She hadn't had an email either to say there was a problem.

As for that other buyer leaving me a low star, still annoyed and definitely will have to switch to free p&p if I get anymore. I don't add anywhere near my full packaging costs to the p&p price but what can you do! In fact I'm probably one of the cheapest sellers in my category for P&P. I'm just irritated that she looks like she leaves bad stars/feedback at will for sellers - is there any point contacting ebay about her? I know stars are meant to be anonymous so not sure if I can. And I suppose they will just say it is her opinion...

I would recommend not charging any more for postage than it actually costs you - and I mean just postage, not packaging too. If a buyer pays more than the value of the stamps they can see when they receive the package, even if its a few pence, they are more likely to be annoyed. Unfortunately the buyers forget the DSR is for postage AND packaging - but they really don't care a lot of the time. If you need to cover the extra few pence for packaging then add it to the item price if you can.

I doubt there is any point in contacting ebay - they will just say its her point of view which is allowed. No harm in trying though. Unfortunately it sounds like you just got one of the more unreasonable buyers. Don't forget to block them!

    Blocked straight away!!

Thanks for the advice re P&P, I think it may be a case of going to free postage or as you say stamp price tops. Most of my buyers are giving me 5s for P&P, but I think I might have to offer free postage as it seems to be the odd, pain in the bum, buyer like this that can cause real problems, and at least that takes it away. Only problem is overseas postage, but that can just be reduced I guess. I just wonder how other sellers, who charge £1-3 more than the stamp price seem to do OK on their stars. It baffles me.

Charge a little bit less for postage than the value of the stamps - that way people see you are charging less and are suitably impressed. As you say, the only sure way to protect that particular DSR completely is to offer free postage and then they can't leave stars for it. But then that kind of buyer will probably just mark you down for something else instead!
  • eCheques are a nightmare, I've had nothing but problems with using them to pay and receiving them, I don't accept them any more as a seller, since they take at least 5 days to clear and I'm sat worrying about whether the buyer has actually put it through or not. I have had one take 10 days to go through before and the seller had requested payment within 5 days, so it caused lots of problems.

I'd drop them a message to say it hasn't gone through and tell them you have someone else interested so require payment as soon as possible or at least notification that they're actively trying to pay you.

Unfortunately if you sell on ebay you can't refuse a paypal echeque.

Also a buyer has no control over which payments randomly go as an echeque, this week I have so far bought and paid for around 32 items, two of those payments have gone as echeques for no apparent reason. Both of them were in the middle of a run of payments with the payment before and the payment after going normally.

or at least notification that they're actively trying to pay you

They have tried to pay, so there doesn't seem any point in asking them to confirm it again. Anywya if you read the thread you will note that buyer has now paid by other means so all is well.
