Hi just had the whole house refurbished...

Seen the builder place 3.5mm hardboard down on the first floor in someone Else's house was thinking of doing the same. BTW I'm having carpets laid

- Is it worth the head ache my floors are reasonably even but was thinking it will stop creaking in the future offer sound insulation and better carpet feel.

is it worth it ?

plain hardboard pinned down can create a bit of a clapperboard effect - If glued and screwed slightly better. - If foam laminate floor underlay used between hardboard and original floor with screws you get the best finish + duck tape over the joints.

If you want to stop floorboards creaking, screw them down - just be sure to check for pipes and wires. I can't see what you'll achieve putting hardboard down that a good underlay won't do, especially if your floor is flat - it'll just be a nightmare if you need to lift the floor in the future for maintenance and the hardboard is pinned down in the way.

I'm with ic on this one. Never seen hardboard laid for carpets - vinyl yes, but not carpets. Good underlay will sort it all out.

Biggie. The very best 'feel' for carpet is had with proper underlay of wool and rubber. It lasts very much longer than the foam stuff and that means your carpets will last much longer too.
Try LCW underlay of Liverpool. I bought many rolls of the stuff and even put it under laminate to make its thermal performance almost as good as carpet. I've no affiliation with them BTW.

My carpet shop always recommended me putting down hardboard before carpet. I did this 15 years ago and recently took the carpet up (house layout change). The carpet wore remarkably well. Depends on floorboard quality I guess.

    I'm a cloud 9 fan too :)
