SNAD - why are all my purchases going wrong, help please.

I've just bought a set of interior car seats for my wifes car (2006 car). The description described them as having "some staines which will clean up", which is to be expected with secondhand car seats. The reality is they are absolutely filthy and probably 70% of the fabric has very significant staining which is very very unlikely to be removed. Further numerous metal parts of the seats are actually rusting, which I would not expect on an internal car part. The seats are unusable. Having now gone back to the advert it looks like the photos on Ebay had been photoshopped to hide the level of staining
The issue I have is that the postage costs are not far off the purchase price - £60 purchase and £40 postage costs. What happens if I raise a claim via Ebay or Paypal, am I expected to return them at a cost of £40 to receive £60 back, thereby making myself £60 out of pocket and with no seats to show for it. Or would I get all my postage costs back?
Arrgghh.
All help appreciated.

They will refund the original payment, So the return costs are at your expense.
Not fair but thats how it works. You could ask nicely if they will refund the return costs as well, Small claims court may help you get the money back but at more cost.
Are they a business or private seller.
I think you need to think deeper about advert speak,
If i read the advert.. Some stains that will clear up
I would think errr why didnt you clean them and get a better price. I would then assume you would need a team using industrial cleaning equipment to have any success in removing the stains.
Rusty seats, Maybe stored outside or from a flood damaged vehicle.
Not sure on your maths.. £40 to return will leave you £40 out of pocket not £60.
So £40 will get you £100 back. Your original purchase + postage.
Try and find a cheaper courier, Dont forget it must be tracked and available to check online.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Did you see that Episode of Top Gear when they did a forensic examination of what's to to be found on car seats? OMG!!! :eek:0 -
It always amazes me how many people sell stuff that's stained-dirty & say, should clean up ok.
If they think that it will clean up then for goodness sake clean it before you sell.
I'm all for used stuff but not other peoples dirt, I have more than enough of my own.0 -

The trouble is that cleaning some things cost more than they are worth! After using a wedding dress for a photo shoot, we took it to the dry cleaners. It was cleanable but they quoted about £150:eek: They said put it on ebay (uncleaned) and see if anybody buys it!0 -

I once sold a linen skirt that was very nice but a real pain to iron properly as it took for ever. I washed it, spent 25 minutes pressing it beautifully for the photos and it sold for 99p- so I made about 50p after fees. If I had thought about it logically I would have just taken it unironed to the charity shop rather than waste my time ironing it for 50p.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. If you'd taken it to a charity shop they probably would have put it in the recycling - after spending an hour trying to iron it!
The stupid thing about that wedding dress was that somebody saw the photos and wanted to buy it...:rotfl:0 -

At least with a wedding dress someone would possibly have still had a bargain, I've seen everyday stuff that would go in a washing machine with, should clean up ok, on it.0 -

There's no excuse for selling things that should have gone in a washing machine!
I used to work in a charity shop - you would have been amazed (i.e. disgusted) by some of the stuff people gave us!0 -
I would think it is difficult/impossible to get car seats in a washing machine.I am a LandLord,(under review) so there!:p0

Many thanks for the info - I didn't realise I'd get my original postage costs back as well.
To be honest I believe they have doctored the photos to make them look far less stained than they actually are, so whilst they did say there was some staining in the photos they looked pretty good. Plus I was buying them from a car breakers, so I did expect them to sell them uncleaned, as cleaning car seats properly does take quite some time (I speak from experience), however, these seats supplied are totally beyond saving.0
