Stopping tax credits

If I was to stop claiming tax credits half way through a tax year because my circumstances changed and i no longer wished to claim for the remainder of the year, would I have to repay what I had received for the first 6 months even if my circumstances entitled me to the money at that time?

i hope someone can shed some light on this for me! Thank you.

It depends. Tax credits are based on annual income, so if you stopped being entitled eg because you got a massive pay rise, then you might have to pay back what you were paid because your annual income over the tax year was too high.

But if you stopped being entitled because of something else eg child leaving education, hours dropping then you should be OK. But you have to do the "renewal" after April next year as that finalises your claim for this year - if you don't do it then you will have to pay back everything you got this year.
