I'd like to reinforce what Macman said - personally I've never paid for a telly, a just circulate them on Freecycle. I've currently got a (20"?) flatscreen in my living room, a modern CRT with freeview built in for the bedroom and a very large widescreen CRT for my shared kitchen in London.

They were all TVs that people were throwing out to 'upgrade', but they're all very serviceable units for watching telly on that I got for free!

I know it's not what you were asking about, but, being strapped for cash, and not wanting to spend cold winter days TVless, don't forget, if you have a PC/laptop, you can watch all the freeview channels on

and I think, if you have Windows Media Center with the requiered TV tuner, you can record too:-

I know a PC is not as good as a TV for watching stuff on, but at least you'd be able to without a spending any more cash! Hope that's of some help.

Whether that's free or not depends on how much telly you watch and whether or not you have truly unlimited broadband.

I asked for a portable CRT telly on Freecycle and got 6 offers in an hour! People are giving these things away - can't understand why as they work pefectly and some have better picture quality than an LCD TV via a Scart cable IMO

Here's another vote not to get into debt. Freegle or gumtree will get you a 32" TV for free or very cheap, with a much better picture and sound than the cheapo TVs you'd be looking at new and getting yourself into debt over. This leaves you able to spend £80 or less on a Freeview recorder (or Freeview PVR) to record programmes onto.
