Hi everyone,
Im off to The Big apple in June, for round about 10 nights and was looking for some help.
I don't know where the best area to stay would be in terms of location ( how central to everything the hotel would be ) and the best cost.
Would anyone be able to point me the right direction?!!!
Thank you very much,
Boabby

We stayed at the Travel Inn Manhattan
https://www.thetravelinnhotel.com
which is on 42nd street. Bit noisy if you get a room over looking 42nd street but heh its New York. 5-10 min walk to Times Square and if you’ve got a car you get free parking. That was main reason for booking the hotel as we drove up from Washington DC and free secure parking was a real boost but the hotel was fine. As previous post said check out Tripadvisor as some of the reports will make you squirm.
The hotel was clean, staff were fine and it’s opposite a NYPD station. The under ground were on strike when we visited so we had to walk everywhere but found the river buses very useful.0 -
Thanks very much guys.
I'll dig around trip advisor and see whats what.
THANK YOU!!0 -
Ive stayed at the Herald Square Hotel a couple of times, its in a fantastic location (Just off 5th Avenue, 2 blocks away from the Empire State Building) and at a very reasonable price.0

Hi,
I've been a couple of times and myself and friends and family have all stayed in the Pennsylvania hotel. Its right opposite Madison Square Gardens and a block away from Macys. Its about a 10 minute straight walk to Times Square.
The hotel is not the nicest and some rooms have damp but its a good price and the room are livable.
I recommend getting a bus from Port Authority (the bus station by times square) to Woodbury common. Its a huge mall where you can get all designer names discounted. Think its $40 but definately worth it or the savings you would make.
If you go to the customer service desk in Macy's (think its on the first floor) an show them your passport they will give you a 10% discount card which you can use on anything but make up in the store.
I would also recommend the grey line bus tour. There are people selling tickets (think it starts by Port Authority) you buy one ticket but can hop on and off all day. Each bus has a member of staff giving information over a microphone. If you choose the downtown option this takes you to places like Central Pak, Rockafella Centre, Times Square, Battery Park (where you can either pay for ticket to ellis and liberty island OR if you just get the free ferry to Staten Island you still get close enough to takes pics but cant get off at the island)....takes you everywhere worth going basically.
Soho and Canal Street are good for shopping. They sell a lot of repica stuff which i dont think is legal so you will find them whispering to you or showing you pictures of Dior and Chanel bags etc and if you give them the nod they will leed you into some back room!!
I would certainly recommend seeing a show in New York. There is a stand at the bottom of Times Square where they sell any tickets that have not been sold for that nights shows so should get them cheaper.
If i can think of anything else i will post again!Making the most of what I've got.
I have now realised earning more money won't make me richer but clearing my debts will!!0 -

an excellent forum on NY - well worth looking through some of the posts there0 -
Metrobus, you won't regret staying there, its not the fanciest hotel in NY, but it is definately in one of the very best locations. There's a great bagel/coffee house just across the street from there, the Flatiron is only a 5 minute walk away, Empire State is 2 minutes away. I think all of the rooms at the Herald Square come with a free safe, which i would recommend using - not a good idea to carry all of your cash around in one go, too tempting!
If you like eating in restaurants, try the Tribeca and Greenwich Village parts of the city, great choice and reasonable prices. Personally, id recommend visiting Ground Zero, then walking to the west of Manhattan til you reach the Hudson River, then walk all the way around the tip of Manhattan (Battery Park), take a trip on the ferry over the Ellis Island (The museum is worth more of your time than the Statue of Liberty is) and just keep walking, you'll come to a harbour area with some nice shops and coffee houses , plus the fact that you dont see too many tourists there.0 -
